We hope that you have had a good week. Since we are discussing lawn renovation this month, we thought we’d talk about some of the best grass types for Massachusetts. First. we will look at three cool-season grass types and then we’ll look at the warm-season type of grass for Massachusetts.
Cool Season & Warm Season Grass Types for Massachusetts
Fine-Leaf Fescues
These kinds of grasses have a very narrow leaf blade that is almost like a needle. These seeds are included in the turfgrass blends because they can tolerate shade well. It often is found in lawns that are neglected since it is able to withstand high pH levels. Because of the very fine texture, it’s often hard to mow.
Kentucky Bluegrass
Kentucky bluegrass is high quality and a gorgeous green color. It’s also able to recuperate. However, it is easily damaged, will suffer from drought and heat, and requires a moderately high level of maintenance. It also will often thatch and is susceptible to a lot of diseases and can’t tolerate salt or shade.
Perennial Ryegrasses
These are bunching grasses that are made for cool-season and are similar in how they look to bluegrass. They don’t form thatch, can tolerate heat, and they might be resistant to drought. They are often prone to disease and don’t tolerate freezing if there’s wind or they’re flooded. These types of dark green in color and wonderful mowing qualities and are finely textured. It’s also great to blend with Fine Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass.
Zoysiagrass
Here we have the lone option for warm-season grass types that you will see on lawns in Massachusetts. It’s simple to identify since it has leaves that are covered in stiff hairs. It stays brown far into springtime and will turn brown again when the first frost of fall comes. It’s quite invasive and it’s often a reason that neighbors argue. It’s best to be planted at beach residences since people can enjoy it during the summertime when it’s green.
