Spring is a great time to give your garage a thorough cleaning. The weather is nicer, and you can open up the garage door and put things outside without worrying so much about snow and ice. So here are five steps that you can take to do spring cleaning on your garage
Step 1 – First, Clear Out Your Garage
This may seem like it’s lots of work. The truth is, that it will be. However, the process doesn’t have to be long. Pull all of the stuff from your garage that isn’t stored properly. Otherwise, it’s going to get in your way. Pull your car out, take anything out that’s on your floor or that’s propped up in a corner and remove containers and boxes.
Step 2 – Begin Weeding
The best thing that you can do is to have two bins – one to put trash in and the other for things you’re donating. As you’re pulling things out, weed the items out that you aren’t keeping by tossing them or donating them. - Anything you’ve used once or more in the past year, keep.
- Anything that you didn’t touch in more than a year, toss.
- Keep the tools that you’re actually using. Let go of the ones you don’t.
Step 3 – Clean Your Garage Walls, Floor & Other Areas
Since you have a clear space and can get to the areas that are usually covered in the items, it’s the time to clean. Sweep the cobwebs and dust out. Then take a good cleanser to give your floor a thorough wash. Other things you might want to do are:
- Use a sponge for cleaning the walls. Spots that are hard to reach can be done with a sponge mop.
- Sweep the cobwebs and dust from the ceiling.
- Take a degreaser and wash down your hand-contact and work surfaces.
- Wash your windows and doors’ inside.
Step 4 – Assess Storage & Implement Some New Fixtures
Chances are that you have a few areas for storage in your garage. There may be shelving, you might have a workbench with your tools and there could even be overhead storage. Think about what you already have, consider the ways that it can be organized better and figure out if you need some more. During this process, reorganize the things that are in the spaces to make sure everything has a spot. Installing some more shelves or cabinets might just be the ticket to organizing your space and giving it new life
Step 5: Move Everything into the Garage Using a Plan
Now that you have gotten rid of the unnecessary items, cleaned your floor and revamped or reorganized your storage, it’s time to bring things back in. But you should do I t with some forethought. Below are some tips.

- Don’t put things back in your garage that you can store elsewhere.
- Don’t clutter your floor if possible.
